After the eight edition of IPL organized on 2015, there came some twists and turns in the tournament. Two major teams that of Chennai and Rajasthan were suspended from the IPL for a minimum period of 2 years due to some malpractices done by the owners. As a result, two brand new teams emerged in 2015 – 2016 and replaced the expelled old teams CSK and RR. One of the newly formed teams which participated in the ninth edition of VIVO IPL i.e. last year itself is the team from Pune named RPS. The man who led the team RPS in the IPL 2016 was M S Dhoni. He was also the captain of team CSK which got expelled. During the player auctions, RPS was the first one to pick Dhoni for their team. However, their journey at the IPL 2016 was not a good one as they managed to finish only seventh out of the eight teams playing IPL. So this year, RPS is expected to go all guns blazing and create history as the VIVO IPL tournament is going to enter its 10th season.

Followed by the match fixing allegations on the two top teams of IPL namely CSK and Rajasthan Royals, the BCCI decided to expel both the teams for a minimum period of 2 years and form two new teams. Thus the RPS team was formed by the Goenka Group in the latter half of 2015. On the 15th December 2015, a prayer draft was organized by the IPL committee where RPS selected valuable players like Ashwin, Dhoni, Du Plessis, Rahane, etc. On 18th Jan, 2016, the Goenka group proudly named their team as RPS and also announced their team captain. IPL 2016 was not a memorable year for RPS as they did not qualify for the play off stage.

The RPS franchise is proudly owned by the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group chief Sanjiv Goenka. The CEO of the RPS team is Raghu Iyer. The owners of this IPL team also own another football team named Atletico De Kolkata which is one of the top teams of ISL, a IPL styled football tournament in India.

Ajinkya Rahane was the top run getter of RPS and did exceptionally well with his bat and scored 480 runs in 14 matches. Adam Zampa was their top wickets taker with 12 wickets in just 5 matches.
