Reliance Jio’s Prepaid and Postpaid Internet Plans and Voice and SMS Plans | Reliance Jio’s Free Unlimited Voice Calls

Mukesh Ambani – the AGM of Reliance Industries said that internet should be cheap. In an attempt to provide his fellow Indian citizens with cheap and yet fast internet, Mukesh Ambani declared the launch of Reliance Jio. This new plan stated that people can enjoy superfast 4G LTE data connections for as low as Rupees 50 for every single GB of data used. The problem however was that when the plans were unveiled, the promise of ‘Per GB Data @ Rs. 50’ kind of seemed hazy. The plans actually looked far more expensive than what was promised.

Reliance Jio Data, Voice and SMS Charges

This left users with an agonizing pain of a decision-making conundrum. This article here today intends to relieve potential buyers from all pain. Here we will decode the pricing plans for both prepaid and postpaid offerings from Reliance Jio. So, if you are looking for a 4G LTE connection, don’t buy one until you have completed reading this article.

To Start With…

Is Reliance true to its promise of ‘Per GB Data @ Rs. 50’?

Our answer to this question is – YES and NO!

Confused? Don’t you worry, here is a quick explanation:

If you are selecting a plan which is of higher denomination (i.e. a high priced plan), the price per GB of data will be either Rs. 50 or less. If you go for a low priced plan, the price of per GB of data will escalate up to Rs. 100.

If you really thought that Reliance is going to offer a flat rate of Rs. 50 for every gig of data, you were plain ‘Wrong’. You are looking at a capitalist agenda. Don’t forget the simple rule of capitalism – ‘Profit is all that matters’.

5 important things you should keep in mind:

  1. Reliance Jio has two options – 4G LTE Data and there is Wi-Fi Data. 4G LTE is basically mobile data. You need to turn on your mobile data if you want to use this. The Wi-Fi data is offered via Wi-Fi hotspots, named as Jio-Hotspots. These hotspots have been installed at various places. In case you happen to be close to a hotspot, you can quickly turn of Jio 4G LTE mobile network and turn on Jio Wi-Fi data. Every plan that is offered by Reliance Jio has both mobile network and Wi-Fi network components. The amount of data that can be used when Wi-Fi is turned on will be double the data that can be used by 4G LTE mobile data.
  2. All plans offer free unlimited 4G data for night. However, night time is limited for the period of 2AM to 5AM. In case you have a lot of downloads to do, you can use that time to schedule the downloads without spending money.
  3. Irrespective of the plan you select, you will get free voice call features. The calls made over the internet will consume absolutely no data. You can use apps like Skype, Hangouts, Emo etc.
  4. Every plan has a data quota allocated for it. In case you end up using the allocated data, you can continue to use more data but then, the charges will become Rs. 50 for every gig of data when you use Wi-Fi and Rs. 250 for every gig of data when you use the mobile network.
  5. Services like JioSecurity, JioNewspaper, JioTV, JioCloud (with 5 GB storage space), JioMags, JioMusic and JioCinema will offer free subscription. However, data consumed while using these apps will be debited from the allocated data.

That’s interesting right? But what about the plans. Hold your horses. We are about to start with the plans and their respective pricing.

Based on the table above, this is what we can understand…

  • Plan I gives consolidated data of 300 MB over mobile network and Wi-Fi. The validity is for just 1 day and good for those who need internet connection for a short time frame. The plan has a price of Rs. 19. Taking consolidated data into account, the price per GB of data stands at Rs. 64.85. However, if we ignore Wi-Fi data, the price per GB of data consumed under 4G LTE mobile network will be Rs. 194.56. The true benefit is free STD and local calls over the internet.
  • For Plans II and IV, the effective price comes to around Rs. 50 per gig of data consumed if the consolidated data (4G LTE and Wi-Fi data allocation) is entirely consumed. So, the prices of 129 and 299 for plans II and IV are justified and as promised.
  • Plan III and Plans V to X have exactly same validity period. However, if you notice, Plan III has no Wi-Fi data allocation. This makes the Plan as THE MOST EXPENSIVE plan among all 10 plans made available. Go for this plan only and only if you have less data requirement but you rely on heavy internet calling. Plan III is not ideal if you plan on surfing the internet more. You will be at a loss. As for Plans V to X are concerned, they are very cost effective and offer a price of Rs. 50 for each gig of data used only if the consolidated data is considered for each plan.

Now the question is, which plan should you use?

It depends. We have already explained the scenario where Plan III should be used. Remember that if you need data for checking emails occasionally or you need to use Whatsapp or similar apps for very less amount of time, Plan III makes an ideal choice.

However, if you more or less a frequent internet user and love to do Facebook or Twitter or read content on web or look for information on web or occasionally watch YouTube videos or use apps like Hot Star, Plan V becomes the most ideal choice because, the consolidated data you get is 12 GB, which is more than enough for normal users. On top of that there are free calls, unlimited night data and of course, 100 free SMSes every single day. This makes it a perfect choice within budget.

What about plans VI to X? Well, the only time you should purchase any of these is when you are a very heavy multimedia user. For example, you watch a lot (we really mean a lot) of videos every day, these plans should be perfect for you. Else, it will be pure wastage of money.

Are there any top up plans?

Spot on! We knew that this question was coming and hence, we are ready to answer it for you. The answer is YES.

The question is…

Why will you need a top up plan? The answer is simple. Remember we said that once you exhaust your allocated data limit for normal plans, the prices increase significantly? Why do you want to pay more when you can do a quick top up and keep the prices low.

Unfortunately, we only know that there are 4 different types of top ups. As of now, we don’t have any additional information. Once we get more info, we will update this article.

What if you don’t need free calling and SMS?

Sometimes we really don’t need those features like free calling over internet or free SMS. Anyway, SMSes are almost obsolete. So, if you don’t require those features, you can opt for what is known as Data Add-ons. These are basically no-frills internet packs where all you get is data. Nothing extra. No free calls, no free SMSes – plain, simple, old-fashioned data-only plans.

Reliance Jio plans on offering this data-only add-ons starting January 1, 2017. They are also known as STV or Special Tariff Vouchers. There are 8 add-ons available. Their pricing and features are given in a tabular format below:

8 Eligibility condition Any subscriber using a prepaid plan can use add-on packs. If the allocated data under STV is exhausted, data usage at 4G speed can be continued exactly at the same price for entire validity period of the STV.

So, it becomes clear from the above table that higher the denomination of the add-on pack, the lower is the price per GB of data used. Interestingly, no validity period is applicable for any add-on pack, which makes these Special Tariff Vouchers really special.

That’s pretty much everything you need to know about the prepaid plans offered by Reliance Jio. But what about the postpaid plans? Many users prefer postpaid connection. In case you are one such consumer, continue reading to know about the postpaid plans Reliance Jio has to offer.

Reliance Jio Postpaid Plans and Their Prices

Let us start with a table again. There are 7 different plans for postpaid users with some excellent benefits. The table below will also give the effective rate of per GB of data usage.

Particulars Tariff Plans
Rs 149 (I) Rs. 499 (II) Rs. 999 (III) Rs. 1499 (IV) Rs. 2499 (V) Rs. 3999 (VI) Rs. 4999 (VII)
Voice Calls – Local + STD (both local and national roaming) Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
4G LTE Data 0.3 GB 4 GB 10 GB 20 GB 35 GB 60 GB 75 GB
Night Data NA Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Wi-Fi Data through Wi-Fi Hotspots NA 8 GB 20 GB 40 GB 70 GB 120 GB 150 GB
Consolidated Data 0.3 GB 12 GB 30 GB 60 GB 105 GB 180 GB 225 GB
Effective Price per GB of data based on consolidated data Rs. 496.66 Rs. 41.58 Rs. 33.3 Rs. 24.98 Rs. 23.8 Rs. 22.22 Rs. 22.22
Jio Apps Subscription worth Rs. 1,250 will be provided for free with all packs
Local and National SMS 100 Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Validity of pack Every Billing Cycle – that is, 30 days.

If you properly analyze the above table, you will notice that the first plan is super expensive and hence, it is not really worth going for unless your data consumption is very very low. However, if you are regular user, going for the plan with 499 rupees tariff is the best option because most users can nicely complete their internet requirements within 12 gigs of data per month. However, to utilize all 12 gigs, you need to use exhaust both mobile network and Wi-Fi data allocated

In case you are a very heavy user of internet, you should go for plans III to VII. The amount of data available under these plans will help you with your needs (mostly going for multimedia content over the internet).

Best part for all plans is unlimited voice calls over the internet using services like Skype, Hangouts, Emo etc.

Notice carefully and you will see that Plan I is not only the most expensive one but it is also the worst of the lot. There is no free night data, no Wi-Fi and free SMSes are limited to 100 per day as compared to unlimited SMSes in all other plans. So, just because Plan I has the lowest tariff, it doesn’t mean that you have to go for that plan.

What about top up plans for Postpaid connections?

Of course you have top up plans. These top up can be used anytime within a billing cycle if necessary as allocated data may be used up any moment. There are 2 different top up plans available for postpaid users.

Are there add-on plans?

We again ask the question. What if you are in no need of free SMSes or free voice calls? What if you are looking for only data plans. Put in other words, all you need is data. You don’t need anything else! This is where the add-on plans come in handy.

As in case of prepaid connections, postpaid users can also avail 8 different add-on plans that will be offered from January 1, 2017.

The plans are exactly the same as in prepaid plans. However, we are still giving you the table in case you don’t feel like scrolling back up.

6 Eligibility condition Any subscriber using a postpaid plan can use add-on packs during the billing cycle if the data limits of existing tariff packs are exhausted and the subscriber wishes to keep 4G data speeds on.

Users of postpaid or prepaid connections need to remember the following points clearly:

  • The Wi-Fi data which is provided cannot be used from anywhere else apart from public Wi-Fi hotspots installed by Reliance.
  • The free benefits that are provided under any tariff plan must be completely used before the validity of the plan ends. If the users fail to utilize those free benefits before the validity ends, the benefits will not be rolled over. They will simply be forfeited.

Conclusion:

Yes, there are various plans that do offer price of 50 rupees or less for 1 GB of data. However, that is true only when the consolidated data is taken into account. Now the problem is, you may not always have access to Jio Hotspots. In such situations you will have to rely only on your mobile data. Given such scenario, the price per GB of data goes up. This particular loophole in the Reliance Jio connections make us wary about the offerings. If you ask us, then we will say that the offerings are pretty pricey because you won’t go and stand in range of a public Wi-Fi to access internet. You will usually be moving around. So, this Wi-Fi part will mostly remain useless.

It is a well thought out plan for fooling people. The plans have been so cunningly laid out that you will eventually be paying really high prices once you take out Wi-Fi out of the equation. That’s our thought. What do you think? Let us know through the comments section.
